Disease-Specific Groups
The disease-specific groups provide a forum for members to identify areas of common concern and opportunities for integration and collaboration.
Onchocerciasis NGOs for Elimination (ONE)
River blindness is a parasitic disease transmitted by black fly bites near fast-flowing rivers, causing skin rashes, intense itching, and potentially blindness. Annual Mectizan treatment controls symptoms; some Latin American countries have achieved elimination. Chair: Lindsay Rakers (The Carter Center).
Trachoma Group
Trachoma is the world's leading infectious cause of blindness, caused by Chlamydia trachomatis and spread in areas lacking sanitation and clean water. Advanced stages require surgical correction to prevent permanent vision loss. Chair: PJ Hooper.
Schistosomiasis & Soil-Transmitted Helminths
Schistosomiasis is a water-borne parasitic disease; STH infections affect vulnerable populations through contaminated soil. Both are preventable and treatable through combined medical and WASH interventions. Acting Chair: Cosmas Ndellejong (Sightsavers).
Lymphatic Filariasis
Known as elephantiasis, this mosquito-borne parasitic disease causes severe disfigurement. Treatment can alleviate symptoms and prevent transmission. Chair: Deborah Mensah.
Leprosy Group
Hansen's disease is a curable infection affecting skin and nerves, yet 3–4 million people live with resulting disabilities. WHO's strategy emphasises zero disease, zero disability, zero discrimination. Chair: Geoff Warne (ILEP Federation).
